Located along the Merrimack River northwest of Boston and once a major producer of textiles, Lowell was a thriving industrial center in the 1800's, drawing many workers to its mills. Many of the workers coming to Lowell were immigrants, filling its streets with people from all over.. Bordering Dracut, Tewksbury, Billerica, Chelmsford, and Tyngsboro, the city is easily accessed from the surrounding suburbs. With a population of 103,512 in 14.5 square miles, Lowell is now the fourth largest city in Massachusetts and a county seat of Middlesex County.

Lowell's history remains present in the brick buildings that line the streets. The Lowell National Historical Park contains the old mill district which has been partly restored. During a measles epidemic in 1879 and 1880, Dr. Moses Greeley Parker suggested using numbers to call Lowell to avoid communications paralysis if all four telephone operators became ill. This was the first use of telephone numbers. Lowell is also famous for the novelist Jack Kerouac who was born in Lowell, and some of his biographical works are set there.

The city boasts entertainment of all types. Sports fans can watch the Lowell Spinners (class A professional baseball affiliate of the Red Sox) or the UMass Lowell baseball team at the Edward A. LeLacheur Park Baseball Stadium. Hockey fans will see the the Lowell Devils and the UMass Lowell Division I NCAA hockey team play at the Tsongas Arena, which is also used for concerts. The Merrimack River Vandenberg Esplanade is home to the Sampas Pavilion for concerts and walkers, swimmers, and bikers enjoying leisure time along the river.

Music and art fans are not forgotten in Lowell. The Lowell Philharmonic Orchestra is a community orchestra that offers free concerts, as well as opportunities for music students to gain experience performing. The birthplace of painter James McNeill Whistler has been transformed into the Whistler House Museum of Art, and The Revolving Museum showcases creative expressions from local artists.

The city hosts many events throughout the year, such as the Bay State Marathon in October, the Lowell Folk Festival in July, the Lowell Southeast Asian Water Festival celebrating Southeast Asian Culture, Winterfest in February, the Massachusetts Poetry Festival, and the Lowell Summer Music Series. The Folk Festival draws around 250,000 people each year, and the Summer Music Series brings many well known musicians to the city.

In addition to sports and concerts for entertainment, residents can explore the 1,140 acres of the Lowell-Dracut-Tyngsboro State Forest. Six miles of trails for horseback riding, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, hiking, and bicycling explore the forest, as well as the ponds, swamps, and wetlands contained within it.

Lowell has twelve elementary schools, seven middle schools, and Lowell High School, as well as nine private schools. It is home to UMass Lowell and Middlesex Community College for those seeking higher levels of education. The city claims two hospitals, Lowell General and Saints Medical Center.

Lowell offers a variety of living options, with lower priced single-family homes selling around $75,000 between May 2008 and May 2009. Homes in the higher price range sold for around $372,420. Larger single family homes sold for up to $685,000, although the median price was $184,350. Because of its history as a manufacturing center, transportation to and from Lowell is quite easy. It is reachable from Interstate 495 and US Route 3 as well as from the Lowell Connector. Routes 3A, 38, 110, and 133 offer easy access from nearby towns. Local transportation is provided by the Lowell Regional Transit Authority, which offers fixed route bus services and paratransit services. The bus services connects to the Lowell Line of the MBTA commuter rail system at the Gallagher Transit Terminal, connecting the city to Boston.
